Frequently asked

What is the SIE exam?

The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam is FINRA's entry-level exam on securities industry basics. Anyone 18 or older can take it without a sponsoring firm. Together with a qualification exam such as the Series 7, it leads to registration as a representative.

How many questions are on the SIE, and how long is it?

80 multiple-choice items in 1 hour 45 minutes: 75 scored and 5 unscored pretest items you cannot tell apart. FINRA cut the pretest items from 10 to 5 on October 27, 2025.

What score do you need to pass the SIE?

A scaled score of 70 on a 0 to 100 scale. The scale is adjusted for small differences in difficulty between question sets, so it is not simply 70% correct.

How much does the SIE cost and how long is it valid?

The fee is $100. A pass is valid for four years from the day you pass, or from the end of a later registration with a firm.

How long do you wait to retake the SIE?

Until January 18, 2027: 30 days after a first or second failed attempt and 180 days after a third. From January 19, 2027 (FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-18): 15 days and 60 days.

Is Savvy SIE free?

You can start free, with no account: the diagnostic, the daily set, the first lesson of every module, shorter practice sets and one full timed 80-question exam. The Savvy SIE Pass ($9.99 one-time, 6 months of full access, no subscription) unlocks every lesson, unlimited full timed exams, readiness by section and the study plan. Your progress stays on your device.

Is Savvy SIE affiliated with FINRA?
